Hyundai Bayon Bookings Open: A 4.2m SUV Built to Chase 5 Stars
Many Indian compact SUVs are built to fit under 4 metres and 1.2 litres, because that combination earns the lower 18% GST slab. Small cars must be petrol up to 1200cc and no longer than 4000mm to get 18%, while larger cars and SUVs fall into the 40% slab. The Bayon doesn’t try to fit. At 4.2 metres, it is expected to sit in the same higher slab as the Creta. Hyundai announced on September 23, 2026 that bookings are open. So the question isn’t about a tax trick. It’s whether the Bayon’s space, tech and safety justify its price against a crowded field.
Confirmed vs reported
| Confirmed by Hyundai | Reported or expected (not official) | |
| Booking | ₹11,000, on Hyundai’s India website and at all dealerships | |
| Size | 4.2 metres | Width, wheelbase and boot size not disclosed |
| Powertrain | Petrol with manual and IVT options | Likely the Creta’s 1.5-litre NA petrol (115 PS, 144 Nm) |
| Safety | Platform engineered for 5-star Indian safety standards | Six airbags, ESC and a Level 2 ADAS suite |
| Tech | In-built generative AI voice assistant | Dual 12.3-inch displays, panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera |
| Wheels | 17-inch dual-tone alloys on 215/55 tyres, per the teaser as reported by CarLelo | |
| Launch | Festive season | October 2026 |
Design and space

Hyundai promises superior legroom, headroom and shoulder room, plus a sculpted bonnet, futuristic front fascia and signature H-Edge LED DRLs. The sides add dual-tone alloys, geometric wheel arches, wrap-around cladding and bridge-type roof rails. The teaser images show it in red.
Engine: what’s solid and what isn’t
Hyundai has confirmed only petrol with manual and IVT gearboxes. Most reports point to the Creta’s 1.5-litre NA engine, and one says it will be the only engine, with no diesel. A CNG option has been rumoured but not announced. Earlier speculation mentioned smaller and turbo engines, so treat everything beyond “petrol, manual or IVT” as unofficial until launch.
The 5-star claim, explained
Hyundai’s statement is about platform engineering and safety targets. The actual Bharat NCAP rating hasn’t been announced, so calling the Bayon “5-star rated” would be inaccurate. Detailed safety equipment is also yet to be revealed. What to watch: independent adult and child occupant scores, and what comes standard on base variants.
Bayon vs Creta: the decision most buyers will face
| Bayon | Creta | |
| Price | Not announced | From ₹10,90,700 ex-showroom |
| Engines | Petrol confirmed | Petrol, diesel and turbo petrol |
| Safety | Equipment not yet detailed | Six airbags and ESC across the line-up, Level 2 ADAS on higher variants |
| Tech | Gen-AI voice assistant | Dual 10.25″ displays, Level 2 ADAS, panoramic sunroof |
Autocar India expects the Bayon at ₹9 to 14 lakh, and CarDekho expects ₹10 to 15 lakh. Both ranges overlap the Creta’s starting price. The next-generation Creta is also expected to grow in size.
What the Bayon has to beat
| Rival | Starts at | What it offers |
| Maruti Victoris | ₹10.49 lakh | Level 2 ADAS, AWD, strong hybrid and underbody CNG, six airbags, 360° camera, panoramic sunroof |
| Renault Duster | ₹10.49 lakh | Range runs to ₹18.49 lakh |
| Skoda Kushaq | ₹10.69 lakh | Turbo-petrol engines |
| Hyundai Creta | ₹10.91 lakh | Petrol, diesel and turbo petrol |
| VW Taigun | ₹11 lakh | Turbo-petrol engines, reported 5-star Global NCAP rating |
Here are the starting prices of the models it is most often compared with (ex-showroom, and they vary by city):

Our read, which is analysis and not a reported fact: every one of these starts between roughly ₹10.5 and ₹11 lakh. If the Bayon opens near ₹9 to 10 lakh, it undercuts the field. If it opens near ₹10.5 to 11 lakh, it’s in a crowded fight where the Victoris already lists many of the features the Bayon is only expected to have. Rivals like the Taigun also already carry published crash ratings, while the Bayon so far has only a target. The Honda Elevate and MG Astor are also expected rivals, but their prices weren’t checked for this article.
Is this the Bayon sold in Europe?
Not exactly. Hyundai already sells a Bayon in Europe and Turkey. The India-spec model is said to be a brand-new car, so overseas reviews won’t tell you much about it.
Still unknown
Official mileage, variant lineup and pricing are all unannounced. Ignore any pre-launch mileage number you see, as they are guesses. Delivery timelines will be announced at launch.
Should you book now?
Book if you like the design and want to register early interest in a petrol-automatic SUV between the Venue and Creta. Hyundai hasn’t said how allocation works, so booking doesn’t guarantee an early delivery date. Before paying, ask the dealer whether the ₹11,000 is refundable, whether it counts toward the final price, and whether you pay the launch price or the delivery-date price.
Wait if safety ratings, the full feature list or the final price gap with the Creta and Victoris matter most.
