A Tesla at Rs 50.89 lakh, a BMW at Rs 51.40 lakh, a Mercedes-Benz at Rs 55 lakh: India’s luxury EV market gets a shake-up

Tesla’s decision to slash the starting price of the Model Y by Rs 9 lakh has brought an interesting twist to India’s luxury electric vehicle (EV) market. For the first time, buyers considering a Tesla, a BMW or a Mercedes-Benz electric car can enter these brands at prices separated by just over Rs 4 lakh.

Tesla recently refreshed its India line-up by introducing the Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) at Rs 50.89 lakh and discontinuing the Model Y RWD and Model Y Long Range RWD variants. The move reduced the entry price of the Model Y range from Rs 59.89 lakh to Rs 50.89 lakh. All the prices are ex-showroom.

That places Tesla’s entry offering below the BMW iX1 Long Wheelbase, which is priced at Rs 51.40 lakh (ex-showroom), and the newly launched Mercedes-Benz CLA electric sedan, which starts at Rs 55 lakh (ex-showroom).

The narrowing gap is significant because all three brands occupy very different positions in India’s luxury EV market.BMW is currently the dominant player. According to retail sales data from the industry body Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), BMW’s EV sales surged 124% year-on-year (y-o-y) to 3,537 units in FY26 from 1,580 units in FY25. The company has repeatedly highlighted that the iX1 is its volume driver, contributing more than 80% to its EV sales. BMW also claimed a luxury EV market share of more than 70% in the January-March 2026 quarter, propelled by the iX1.

The BMW iX1 is powered by a single electric motor producing 204 hp and 250 Nm of torque. It is paired with a 66.4 kWh battery pack and offers a claimed MIDC-certified range of up to 531 km.

Mercedes-Benz, meanwhile, is betting on a new generation of EVs, starting with the CLA. The luxury carmaker launched the electric sedan at a starting price of Rs 55 lakh in April 2026, with over 400 confirmed pre-launch bookings. The CLA 200 offers a claimed range of 542 km, while higher variants can travel up to 792 km on a single charge under WLTP testing standards.

Mercedes-Benz retailed 1,047 EVs in FY26, down 9% y-o-y from 1,157 units in FY25, FADA data showed. However, the company continues to expand its electric portfolio and charging ecosystem in India.

Tesla is still a relatively new entrant in the country. The American EV maker opened its first showroom in India in July 2025 and retailed 342 vehicles in FY26.

Despite importing the Model Y as a completely built unit (CBU) from China and attracting a 70% Basic Customs Duty, Tesla has managed to position its entry variant below the starting prices of both the BMW iX1 and Mercedes-Benz CLA.

The new Model Y Premium RWD offers a claimed WLTP-certified range of up to 500 km, seating for five occupants and up to 2,138 litres of cargo space. Its deliveries are scheduled to begin in July 2026.

For buyers, the significance lies not just in the prices but in the choices now available. Within a narrow price band of Rs 50.89 lakh to Rs 55 lakh, customers can choose between Tesla’s software-centric ecosystem, BMW’s best-selling luxury electric SUV and Mercedes-Benz’s latest-generation electric sedan.

“As luxury carmakers continue to expand their electric portfolios, the battle for India’s premium EV buyer is no longer being fought only on technology and range. Pricing is increasingly becoming a key weapon, and Tesla’s latest move has ensured that BMW and Mercedes-Benz can no longer ignore the competition,” an industry analyst told MATRIXOTECH.
