McLaren has unveiled the new McL 6GT concept at Monterey Car Week 2026, introducing one of the British marque’s most distinctive and driver-focused supercars in decades. The biggest headline is the return of a true manual gearbox. The McL 6GT will feature a six-speed manual transmission paired with a V8 engine and rear-wheel drive, making it the first McLaren road car with a manual gearbox since the legendary McLaren F1 debuted in 1992.

Inspired by Bruce McLaren’s M6GT Dream

The McL 6GT takes inspiration from the original M6GT road-car project conceived by McLaren founder Bruce McLaren in the late 1960s. That project was intended to transform McLaren’s racing technology into a road-going sports car but was never fully realised following Bruce McLaren’s death in 1970.

The new model reinterprets that unfinished vision for the modern era. Its low-slung body, wide stance and distinctive Kamm-style rear treatment give it a character that separates it from McLaren’s current supercar lineup. The design combines historic inspiration with modern carbon-fibre construction and contemporary aerodynamic engineering.

Six-Speed Manual Gearbox Is the Star

While modern McLaren supercars are known for lightning-fast automated transmissions, the McL 6GT goes in a very different direction. The six-speed manual transmission puts the driver directly in control of the car’s V8 powertrain.

McLaren has also focused on making the mechanical interaction part of the experience. The concept features hydraulic steering and physical controls instead of relying entirely on electronic interfaces. Its exposed gearshift mechanism is another major visual highlight, reinforcing the car’s analogue character.

The manual shifter is arguably the cabin’s centrepiece. Its exposed mechanical linkage and Speedy Kiwi detailing underline McLaren’s decision to make the act of changing gears a central part of the driving experience.

Production Confirmed for 2028

McLaren says the production version of the McL 6GT is scheduled to arrive in 2028. The car will sit outside the company’s regular core lineup and is expected to form part of a more exclusive family of McLaren models.

Pricing and final production numbers have not been officially confirmed by McLaren. Some reports have suggested extremely limited production and a price in the seven-figure range, but these details should be treated cautiously until the company makes an official announcement.
