BMW has issued a safety recall affecting 27,720 luxury sedans due to a wear-and-tear defect in the drivetrain. The issue centers on the connection joining the driveshaft to the rear axle differential, which can experience excessive wear over time.

If the connection degrades completely, it creates two major hazards: a sudden loss of drive power to the rear wheels while driving, or a risk of the car rolling away when parked if the electronic parking brake isn’t engaged.

Affected BMW Models

The recall spans multiple executive luxury sedans across model years 2021 through 2026:

BMW 5 Series: 2021–2023 540i, 540i xDrive, and M550i xDrive

BMW 7 Series: 2024–2026 750e xDrive plug-in hybrid

BMW 8 Series: 2022–2026 840i and 840i xDrive

How BMW Is Handling the Fix

BMW reported no accidents or injuries related to the flaw prior to filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Dealership service centers will inspect the driveshaft-to-differential connection free of charge. Depending on the level of wear:

Minor wear: Technicians will apply a specialized structural adhesive to secure the joint.

Severe wear: Dealerships will perform a complete replacement of the driveshaft and rear differential assembly.

What Owners Should Do Next

Official notification letters are scheduled to go out to registered owners in early October. Drivers who suspect their vehicle is included do not need to wait for physical mail:

● Locate your 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

● Check the NHTSA recall database or BMW’s official recall lookup tool.

● Always engage your electronic parking brake when parked to eliminate any potential rollaway risk while awaiting service.
